What Causes Gout Attacks Besides Purine Rich Foods?

Most people think that the biggest factor in being susceptible to a gout attack is eating purine rich foods. This is probably true, but there are many other influences in your life that can lead to gout.

First off, gout can be hereditary, it can be caused by stress, illness, dehydration, injuries, surgery, chemotherapy, and a fever.

Medications can also be a problem. Some of the medicine you are taking which can worsen an attack of gout include medicine for tuberculosis, cyclosporine, diuretics such as thiazide, niacin (nicotinic acid), and the aspirin we might be inclined to take to help with the pain.

Additional foods that can cause a problem are chocolate, caffeine drinks, bread and other products made with yeast, and alcohol drinks, especially beer (because of the yeast). You might also want to consider being tested for a yeast intolerance if you are subject to gout attacks.

If you are afflicted with gout, it’s important to visit your health care practitioner to determine what the underlying cause is so it can be addressed head on.
