I almost hesitate to dispel some of the myths and misunderstandings that surround car auctions. After all, keeping uninformed motorists away from the auctions keeps the prices down! Oh, what the heck. Some people think that every car that goes up on the auction block is a clunker with serious problems. Nothing could be further from the case. While of course some cars do have problems, most of the autos in an auction are relatively or entirely trouble free. Many of them come straight out of fleet service with the government or major corporations. These fleet cars are the real steals at auctions. Because their former owners care only about getting them out of inventory, they are universally priced to move. A mechanically flawless, gently used fleet auto – one from a recent model year, even – will often appear at auction and be sold for a price that is literally a fraction of what it would cost on a used car lot.
